The concept and background of ‘basic income’, along with the ways to implement it in reality were discussed. The basic income has been introduced as one of the alternative welfare systems to reflect today’s socioeconomic changes, in which working conditions become more precarious than ever before, in the midst of decrease in the number of jobs. As the ways to realize the basic income system in South Korea, the gradual implementation of unconditionality, universality, and sufficiency (basic income’s three essential principles), as well as financial and administrative strategies are discussed. Escaping from the productivity-centered paradigm, the possibility of living more diverse ways of life is given growing attention as a gift basic income may bring to us.
