Colloquium in May 2021

Choi, Seung-won Emily (Professor, Dept. of Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work at Texas Tech Univ.)

This study examines the relationship between caring for grandchildren (i.e., grandparenting) and mortality risk and how the link differs by race-ethnicity in the United States. Drawing from the Health and Retirement Study (1998–2014), the study found that among whites, intensive non-coresident grandparenting and multigenerational household grandparenting are associated with a lower risk of mortality than no caregiving. However, blacks who provide intensive non-coresident, multigenerational household, and skipped-generation household grandparenting have a higher mortality risk than their non-caregiving counterparts. These findings suggest that sociocultural contexts shape the different racial-ethnic patterns in the effects of grandparenting on older adult mortality.
