Colloquium in Oct. 2021

Jang, Sou Hyun (Professor, Department of Sociology at Sungkyunkwan Univ., South Korea)

There has been a plethora of research to reduce health disparities with various research methods. In the current presentation, I introduce community-based participatory research (CBPR) and how it differs from the traditional research methods. Having various cases of health disparities (e.g., hypertension control, childhood obesity, and HPV vaccination) among Asian and Hispanic immigrants in the U.S., I point out the strengths and implications of the CBPR. In Korea, the number of immigrants has been increased since the 2000s, and they have experienced health disparities. I hope this presentation will contribute to the research on health disparities among immigrants in Korea as CBPR has not been widely conducted in Korea.
