This study analyzes how subjective well-being is associated with gender and fear of crime in South Korea, with multi-variate regression analysis of 2016 Korean General Social Survey data. According to the analysis, Koreans’ subjective well-being is negatively related to the fear of crime, which is on average more strongly felt by women. On the other hand, the study finds no significant evidence of gender differences in the relationship between subjective well-being and fear of crime. From these findings, the study argues that the ‘fear of crime’ may work as a mediating factor in women’s lower level of mental health in South Korea.
